Globe Valve
A globe valve is a linear-motion valve in which a disc or plug moves perpendicular to a seat ring to regulate or stop flow. The flow changes direction as it passes through the body, which causes a higher pressure drop than gate or ball valves but provides good throttling characteristics and reliable shut-off. Body patterns include Z-type (standard), Y-type, which reduces pressure drop, and angle-type, which turns the flow through 90 degrees. Disc designs include flat, plug, needle and composition types. Globe valves are used for flow regulation in steam, cooling water, fuel oil and feedwater systems, for bypass and drain lines, and as the body style for many control valves. Selection parameters include size, pressure class, flow coefficient (Cv), trim material and stem sealing. Standards include ASME B16.34, BS EN 13709 and API 602 (compact forged valves).
